An Open Letter to Pastors
in the Church of the Nazarene
from the Board of General Superintendents
Times of crisis call for strong leadership. In the months following
the tragedies of 9-11, pastors have been among those on the front lines
of providing leadership to communities of suffering and fearful people
everywhere.
Leadership has been put to the test. In particular, pastoral leadership
is being put to the test. People are asking ultimate questions and they
are looking to the church and to pastors for ultimate answers. It is
a heavy and holy responsibility.
We are proud of the leadership that is being provided by Nazarene pastors.
We have received stories from far and near of how you have helped us
all to find our voice in the midst of these uncertain times. And that
is the task of the church in times of crisis to find its voice
so that the good news of hope in Jesus Christ will be clearly proclaimed.
In this special issue of Preachers Magazine, we hope to provide
you with resources to help with this immense and important task. Some
of the best thinkers and leaders in our movement have given sound theological
reflection and practical tools to help you in the continuing work of
shepherding your people. This issue is organized around three themes
and questions:
Pastoral theology. What does it mean to be a faithful pastor when your
people have experienced a corporate trauma?
Congregational education. What are the critical issues that pastors
should teach their people during times of disorientation?
Proclamation. What questions, resources, and strategies are available
when pastors are faced with the task of preaching during a time of crisis?
It is our desire to continually provide you, our true leaders, with
the resources you need to do the good and challenging work of pastor.
May the Lord give you special grace as you faithfully point people to
Jesus
our Hope!
