The season of Advent is the time in the Church Year when the
first advent of Jesus Christ is celebrated, and his second advent is anticipated
with hope. The lectionary has different emphases in each of the three years
of its cycle. But the overall themes of Advent are Gods self-revelation
in the historical person of Jesus, the present reconciliation to God available
to those who repent and confess Jesus as the Christ, and the completion of
this reconciling work in the future, when the consummation we long for becomes
reality. There is, of course, great diversity in how different traditions
envision the second Advent; indeed, even diversity within these traditions
as well. But Christians share a common hope that there will come a day when
all things will be made new, when there will be no more death or mourning
or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away (Revelation
21:4).
