What is the History of Caravan?

The Nazarene Caravan program has been around since the early 1940's and over the years it has undergone many upgrades, but never a complete revision. However, in late 2002, WordAction and the Caravan editorial staff began plans for a comprehensive overhaul of Caravan. Seeking input from Caravan leaders from across the United States and Canada, it was determined that there are five primary areas which most required our attention and focus:
  1. Spiritual Formation

  2. Ministry Training

  3. Nazarene Heritage and Doctrine

  4. User & Visitor-Friendliness

  5. The Scouting Aspect
In the process of addressing these five issues, everything from artwork to curriculum layout... even the overall structure of the program was re-evaluated and adapted to meet the needs of today's local church. As a result, we have developed a whole new generation of Caravan... for a new generation of kids!

How will Caravan help our church minister more effectively?

Caravan is a proven program that is designed to reach young people and their families for Christ. Through an interactive, scouting type of curriculum, Caravan provides children and adults an opportunity to hear the gospel. As children become involved with Caravan, their character is not only shaped in the image of Christ, they also learn more about the beliefs of the Church of the Nazarene.

In addition, Caravan creates an opportunity to train laypeople. Adults and teenagers alike can gain ministry experience through an excellent environment, free to explore their calling to ministry within the church.

What is the age-range children must be in to join Caravan?

The full Caravan program is designed for children ages four to twelve years old. The journey begins with Benson s Buddies, a pre-Caravan program where four to six year-olds who are not yet in elementary school become familiar with the format and ceremonies of Caravan. Upon entering first-grade, they become part of the Caravan Searcher group, through second grade. Third and fourth-graders then become part of the Explorer group, and fifth and sixth-graders become part of the Adventurer group.

Is Caravan local-church oriented?

Yes, very much so. The Caravan program is completely administered and operated by your own church leadership. The General Caravan office provides the tools and training you need to run an effective program, and WordAction provides the Caravan products and any necessary assistance to help your church point kids in the direction of Christ.

How many months of the year does Caravan take place?

Caravan traditionally runs parallel with the school year, which is approximately nine months. Some programs begin as early as August, and go through May or June, and some late programs begin in September and go through June or July.

How do I join Caravan?

There are no membership requirements to be a part of Caravan. Anyone can come at any time and begin the program. There are a few things you need to do in order to earn your scarf or sash. Talk to your church's Caravan director about how you can earn your scarf.

What is Caravan?

Caravan is a weekly kids club committed to the physical, social, mental, and spiritual growth of children. It uses an active, hands-on learning approach to help kids discover, develop, experience and grow.

This Christian scouting-based program focuses on spiritual formation, ministry training and Nazarene heritage and doctrine, and provides a user-friendly outreach program from local churches.

Children study the Church of the Nazarene Articles of Faith. The sixteen articles are statements of faith that the Church of the Nazarene has embraced as foundations of Christian belief.

Caravan encourages children to embrace eight Core Values (holiness, evangelism, character, missions, service, compassion, work and education) illustrated through the lives of prominent figures in Nazarene church history.

Can I use the old Caravan books with the new program?

No. The new books are designed to correlate with the new badges. Though the new Caravan is similar to the old program, there are a significant number of differences that make the old books incompatible with our existing badges and other supplies.

What kinds of churches have a Caravan program?

Though open to other denominations, the Caravan program is a ministry that has been designed by and for members of the Church of the Nazarene. Each year, churches across North America and Europe with as few as 30 members and as many as 3000 participate in the character-building, midweek scouting-based program.

How do I know my kids will be in a safe place?

We strongly recommend that churches carefully screen their volunteers, guides and Caravan directors before entrusting them to work with children. In addition, we encourage the use of permission slips for all field trips, and sufficient adult supervision. It is also recommended the ratio of adults to children be no less than 1:5 (one guide and one assistant for every five children) at all times with the children. Finally, every badge that involves a ministry project or field trip includes suggestions for adequate supervision.

What facilities do we need to have an effective Caravan program?

Though many churches utilize a room set aside for Caravan, most utilize a Sunday School room or other classroom for weekly Caravan meetings. A game room, gymnasium or outside area is helpful, but the fellowship hall of most churches is an adequate solution for most Caravan activities.

How much will it cost me to have my child involved in Caravan?

Each local church is different in how they decide to charge for the Caravan program, depending on their budgetary constraints and amount of money that is generated through fundraising. Generally, most churches charge between $5 and $25 per student for a registration fee. This fee does not begin to cover the actual costs of such a program, but it does allow the church to reach to more families through the Caravan program. Many churches have scholarships available for families who cannot afford the registration fee. Check with your church's Caravan director to determine the program's fees and opportunity for financial assistance.

What if I'm a first-time visitor?

If you are a first-time visitor, you can join in whatever activity the group your friend and you are a part of. Ask for the You Can be a Caravan Searcher (or Explorer / Adventurer) booklet from your Caravan guide. This booklet will help you participate in the activities for your first meeting until you have a full-sized Student book of your own.

What is the history of Caravan?

Click here for a brief history of the Caravan program.

What is the processing time for orders?

Most in stock orders are shipped within 24-48 hours, Monday-Friday. Special orders and items on backorder are shipped as soon as they are available.

Expedited and Overnight orders receive priority attention. However, that does not always mean that they will arrive the next day. Please allow one day for order processing before shipping.

Expedited and overnight orders only count business days (Monday-Friday) and exclude holidays.

Canada and International orders: With customs and extended shipping time, expedited methods of shipment do arrive more quickly than ground shipments, but are not guaranteed to arrive overnight.

How much does the Caravan program cost?

Though most of the cost is incurred in the books, uniforms, and related items, the fee to register a church in the Caravan program is only $15.00 per year.

What kinds of activities do Caravan kids participate in?

Searchers, Explorers and Adventurers have tons of activities, field trips and ministry projects to choose from. Skill badges come in four categories, mental, physical, spiritual, and social. To earn a badge, certain requirements must be met, including a high level of active participation. Badges in the Explorer and Adventurer groups are all electives, enabling kids to work with their guides, customizing their choices based on their needs, desires and available resources. Children participate in everything from camping trips to ministry projects, and learn to serve others, both inside the church and outside in the local community.

How many leaders are needed for an effective Caravan program?

Individual churches have differing needs, resources, and staffing concerns, however, we recommend that each rank have no more than 10-12 children per guide, and one assistant for every guide. Integrity must be protected, and having a second adult or older teenager is not only helpful, it is necessary. In essence, a Caravan group consisting of thirty children should have one Guide for every ten kids, one assistant for every Guide, and an overall Caravan Director.

Why is there only 1 teacher book and 1 student book instead of separate Jr. High and Sr. High teacher and student books?

Research has shown us that almost 80% of North American churches only have one combined Sunday School class for their youth group. Having separate books for Jr. High and Sr. High puts these teachers into a dilemma. Which do they choose? Now it's all rolled into one book to make it easier for everyone. Faith Connections for Youth provides age-level appropriate options, spiritual formation tips, and biblical insights allowing the teachers greater flexibility in tailoring each lesson to fit his or her particular classroom needs. Whether that involves separate Jr. High or Sr. High classes, or a combined age group, everone will be on the same track.

What are the benefits and features of the new curriculum?

* Topics are dealt with from a Wesleyan-Arminian theological perspective.

* Comprehensive scope and sequence covers major biblical themes; major theological principles; themes following the seasons of the Christian calendar; and specific topics relevant to teens and their lives.

* A modified narrative approach is used to explain the biblical text, which lets the passage stand on its own without manipulating it to try and make a point.

* Many more lesson options are available giving teachers much more flexibility.

* Each lesson has age-specific options geared toward older and younger students.

* It's easy to use:

- Unit Overview - Provides a summary of the upcoming unit and suggests additional activities to connect the students, the Bible and the world.

- Lesson Xpress - For the teacher without much time, Lesson Xpress provides an at-a-glance description of each activity, and a notation indicating which age group the activity is appropriate for.

- Lesson Summary - The biblical "commentary" section is both informational and devotional, and communicates the heart of what the biblical passage for the day is about.

- Parent Connection - Reproducible handouts within the teacher book that help parents connect with their teens and to what they're learning.

Can I make copies of WordAction materials to share with my Sunday School class, Bible study or other church related group?

If the section you are reproducing is less than 250 words and not more than 1 page you may use the material as long as the following copyright notice is placed on all copies.
"Taken from [Name of Book] by [Author]. Copyright [Date] by [Copyright Holder]. Used by permission of WordAction Publishing Company. All rights reserved."

For any other use please submit written request to our Rights and Permissions office or fill out the online permission request form.

If I have extra students and don't have enough books to go around, can I photocopy the materials for those students?

You must contact us. These requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

How do I know if the material I want to use is in the public domain?

If the material you want to use was printed in the United States and the copyright date printed on the material is 1922 or earlier, copyright law provides that formal permission is not needed since the copyright has expired. We do recommend that to avoid accusations of plagiarism, the source should be correctly cited. You need to include the title, author, copyright date and publisher.

If the copyright date is 1923 or newer, please send a permission request and WordAction Publishing Company will notify you if the material has entered the public domain.

How do I submit a copyright permission request for WordAction product? Is there more than one option?

You have several options for submitting requests:
  • Submit an online request form. Click here to get to the main Copyright Permissions page, then follow the instructions.
  • Complete an online request form; print it (there's a 'Printer Friendly Version' button on the second page of the form, at the bottom); and submit it by fax or mail.
  • Get a blank form, complete it, and submit it by fax or mail. (Click here to fill out the first part of the form you need, then use the 'Print Blank Form' button at the bottom of the page.)
  • Submit your requestion by letter.

When will the changes I enter actually change my standing order?

You may make changes to your standing order at any time during the quarter. The following schedule will tell you when your changes occur:

Changes entered by March 1st will become effective with the Summer Quarter (June/July/August)

Changes entered by June 1st will become effective with the Fall Quarter (September/October/November)

Changes entered by September 1st will become effective with the Winter Quarter (December/January February)

Changes entered by December 1st will become effective with the Spring Quarter (March/April/May)

Why don't I see my Priority Plus standing order?

When you first set up a web account or create a new standing order, we must connect your standing order information with your web account. Please allow 1-2 business days for this process to happen. This is a necessary precaution to protect your standing order from unauthorized changes. If you need to make changes before your standing order begins to display, call us at 1-800-877-0700 or e-mail us at orders@nph.com.

When I try to edit my Priority Plus standing order, I am taken to the WordAction homepage - why?

The editing of Priority Plus standing orders is done in a second window. If you use a pop-up blocker, that may prevent the new window from opening. Check your pop-up blocker software to see how to allow pop-ups from our site. (For example, in the Google toolbar, hold down the Control button while you click on the link to edit your Priority Plus standing order.)
