How God Leads

COVER STORY

"What Are You Doing that Matters for Eternity?"
by Verne and Natalie Ward

A call to full-time ministry began with a simple commitment to make themselves available to people. Through the leading of God, they understood that the only thing that matters for eternity is people.

FEATURES

  • "Aloft and Afraid," by Robert B. Robeson. With three seriously wounded soldiers in dire need of transport, a disabled aircraft, a rookie copilot, and enemy territory all around, a pilot depends on God's leading in this life-and-death situation.

  • "An Ordinary Gethsemane," by Jeff Crosno. Divine guidance in daily decisions is found not in the handwriting in the sky but in the sanctification of ordinary moments in a life wholly given to God.

  • "Raw Squid and Termites," by Pat Stockett Johnston. Influenced by the testimony of other missionaries and a sensitivity to divine leading, Don Owens accepted God's call into missionary service.

  • "People of the Altar," by Carl M. Leth. There is a central event or element in each community's worship that most clearly defines that Body of Believers. In Nazarene worship, that defining element is the altar.

  • "Midlife Call? Just Say Yes!" by Vicki Honea Copp. Will they think I'm having a midlife crisis? Will they think I'm bored with the same old thing? Will they think I just need some attention? Fears, questions, and eventual obedience came when God issued a midlife call.

  • "Mario and Lena Russ --- Following God's Plan," by Teanna Sunberg. A Cuban man and a Russian woman find each other, salvation, and a ministry --- all through the leading of the Lord.

COLUMNS

  • Commission: "The Romance of the Christ-Guided Life," by Jim L. Bond. Why would a bright, gifted, young couple of such enormous promise invest their lives in the destitute of the inner city? They invest their lives because there is nothing so grand and joyous, so stimulating and fulfilling as living the Christ-guided life, wherever that takes you.

  • Heartbeat: "Dolly's Dream," by Bill M. Sullivan. What impact could a 70-year-old lady's commitment and service to a brand new congregation have now, more than 35 years later?

  • The Deeper Way: "Embracing Exile," by Clarence Kinzler. Explore Jeremiah's insight into the practical dimensions of how a displaced people are not only to survive but also to live purposefully and prosperously while in exile by viewing this time through the lenses of opportunity and mission.

  • Footprints: "Hiroshi Kitagawa and the Cross of Leadership," by Stan Ingersol. A pioneer in the Church of the Nazarene left strategically placed footprints on both Japanese and American soil.

  • Editor's Forum: This month's panel of experts answers questions about unreached people groups and what distinguishes the Church of the Nazarene as a Wesleyan-Holiness church.

  • Family Tree: "Jesus Led Us All the Way: Telling Our Story," by Dan and Kay Croy. God instructed us to tell our stories to our children. We are to impress the Word of God upon our children, but we are also responsible for sharing the stories of our failures and God's faithfulness.

  • Touching: "Making a Living --- and Making a Life!" by David M. Best. Your workbench, your classroom, your desk at work, the attorney in front of the bar in the courtroom --- all of these are images of a person standing in front of an altar, performing a very sacred and high duty.

  • Metro: "In Search of the Perfect City," by Fletcher L. Tink. We must have His agenda for our cities --- cities that fail as perfect, enchanting, or comfortable --- cities that cry out for our creative, redemptive, heaven-initiated involvement.

  • Worldview: "The Call of God," by Bill Selvidge. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we do not approach God's will as a buffet table from which we choose only what pleases our personal tastes. Once we have understood God's will, His call requires that we passionately act upon it.

  • Essay: "What's Keeping You?" by Ron Lush. Following Jesus takes rarely used muscle --- study, diligence, discipline, companion discipleship, and humility.

COMING IN JULY - NAZARENE YOUTH CONGRESS

  • "A Generation of Opportunity" by Ed Robinson. The youth of the Church of the Nazarene are a generation of opportunity. Will they accept the challenge or, like Moses' generation, will they settle for a life of cultural and religious security in the wilderness of the status quo? The keynote speaker for NYC '99 discusses the challenge before this generation of Nazarene teens in a postmodern age.
