The Jesus Film

COVER STORY

"The Miracle on the Screen"
by Wally Marais

Africa is discovering the living Lord Jesus through the JESUS film. The incredible evangelistic results of the first eight months indicate that the goal of 1 million African Nazarenes by the year 2010 may indeed be attainable.

FEATURES

  • "When People See JESUS," by David Hane. From remote fishing villages to crowded urban centers, people across the Asia-Pacific Region are seeing JESUS.

  • "From Carbide Projector to Digital Disk," by Harmon Schmelzenbach. From the carbide projector shown against the canvas wagon of pioneer missionaries Harmon and Lula Schmelzenbach to the worldwide distribution of the JESUS film, Jesus is being lifted up through all means of the day's technology.

  • "Airborne Express: The JESUS Film," by Tim Eby. Nazarene Mission Aviation helps bring the JESUS film to "the uttermost parts of the earth" in areas where there is no communication, no flight weather reporting, and little information about destination airstrips. When the words "relief data incomplete" are printed boldly on flight charts, this missionary pilot depends on God to guide.

  • "Cooperation vs. Competition," by Dean Nelson. In a joint effort to win the lost, Campus Crusade for Christ International and the Church of the Nazarene are working together to show the JESUS film around the world.

  • "Each One Show One," by Joyce Jakobitz. What happens throughout a country when evangelism, salvation, witnessing, and church planting become a chain reaction?

COLUMNS

  • Editor's Forum: This month's panel of experts answers questions about what is being done to provide relief for those in ministry who have huge educational indebtedness and what stance we should take about an advance health care directive/living will.

  • Worldview: "Church Planting and Growth - The Nevius Way," by Donald D. Owens. The pioneer missionary of the Church of the Nazarene to Korea explains the principles that helped to found a self-supporting church there.

  • The Deeper Way: "Living the Holiness Lifestyle - While in Exile," by Thomas J. King. Like the Israelites exiled in Babylon, so the Church today lives in exile in postmodern society. The Old Testament offers insight about living in a world hostile to holiness.

  • Family Tree: "Homestyle Sandwich," by Rick and Bonnie Ryding. A multigenerational family finds love, dignity, and worth as the keys to living "sandwiched" together.

  • Foot Soldiers: "Marge Chapman-Humble, Willing Servant," by J. Wesley Eby. This humble servant of God obeyed His call to leave her comfort zone and serve the homeless and down-and-outers of the inner city.

  • Heartbeat: "By All Means Win Some," by Louie E. Bustle. Evangelism is the bottom line of what the Church is all about. Paul expressed it well when he said, "By all possible means . . . save some" (1 Corinthians 9:22).

  • Touching: "I Stand Amazed," by Hermann L. Gschwandtner. In countries that are closed to traditional evangelistic methods, converts from the JESUS film efforts are starting new churches in their own homes.

  • Portraits: "William Mogotho: A Servant for JESUS," by Debbie Salter Goodwin. A South African JESUS film training coordinator offers a willing heart and ready hands.

  • Commission: "Let the Walls Fall Down," by Jerry D. Porter. Holiness is characterized not only by power and purity but also by missionary passion to reach people of all languages and cultures. This Pentecost Sunday, let the walls fall down!

  • Essay: "Tossing My Bouquet" by Karen Dean Fry. Join with the author as she reflects on her own wedding and muses about another wedding on the horizon - that of the Lamb and His Bride, the Church.

COMING IN JUNE - HOW GOD LEADS

  • "What Are You Doing that Matters for Eternity?" by Verne and Natalie Ward. A call to full-time ministry began with a simple commitment to make themselves available to people. Through the leading of God, they understood that the only thing that matters for eternity is people.
