The work of the Church of the Nazarene in Peru officially began in 1917 when the church commissioned Roger and Mary Winans, then already working in Monsefu. Mary Winans died just as their work was beginning to blossom. Roger Winans later married Esther Carson. Their work with the Aguaruna Indians, including development of a written language and Bible translation and years of frustration before their first convert, is one of the most fascinating stories in mission history.

The first general assembly of the Holiness associations that would later become the Church of the Nazarene elected Reynolds general superintendent in 1907. At the close of the assembly, held in Chicago, the General Mission Board elected him its executive director. Reynolds served the church as general superintendent for more than 20 years. The Hiram F. Reynolds Memorial Hospital is located in Washim, India.
